Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Malaria remains one of the most prevalent and deadly diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. Akko Local Government Area (LGA) in Gombe State is not exempt from this health challenge. Broadcasting, particularly through radio and television, has been recognized as an effective tool for raising awareness and educating communities about preventive measures and treatment options for malaria. This study explores the role of broadcasting in combating malaria in Akko LGA, Gombe State, focusing on the effectiveness of media campaigns in reducing malaria incidence and promoting health behaviors.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various interventions, malaria continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Akko LGA. There is a need to assess the effectiveness of broadcasting in communicating malaria prevention and treatment messages to the community. While some media campaigns have been launched, it is unclear how well they have been received and whether they have led to measurable changes in behavior. This study aims to examine the role of broadcasting in the fight against malaria in Akko LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of broadcasting in raising awareness about malaria prevention and treatment in Akko LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of media campaigns in changing public perceptions and behaviors related to malaria.
3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using broadcasting as a tool for malaria control in Akko LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of broadcasting in combating malaria in Akko LGA, Gombe State. The findings can inform future media campaigns and health interventions aimed at reducing malaria incidence in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Akko LGA and focuses on broadcasting as a tool for malaria prevention and control. It does not cover other regions or broader malaria control strategies outside of broadcasting.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
1. Broadcasting: The distribution of audio or video content to a large audience through radio, television, or other media platforms.
2. Malaria Prevention: Measures taken to prevent the transmission of malaria, including the use of insecticide-treated nets, indoor spraying, and antimalarial drugs.
3. Media Campaigns: Organized efforts to use broadcasting as a tool to communicate health messages to the public.
